Maverick? I’m sorry about Goose. Everybody liked him. I’m sorry.

I want to talk about the first gif for a moment. Look at how much Maverick’s hand is shaking. Just from the mere mention of Goose. He is hurt so much by the mention of Goose that his hand shakes pretty violently, and it only stops because Maverick grips his locker harder.

Maverick loved Goose so much and is clearly much more affected by his death than anyone else thinks.

And now for the last gif; which reads to me as,
“Well I didn’t expect that.”

But it’s too late.

Their fighting over the top gun trophy is why Goose is no longer here.
Maverick knows that and blames himself.

And here is the thing,

I think Iceman knows it and blames himself too. The way he is struggling to get his apology out, reads to me that he has more to say, but chooses not to.

Could he say it was all his fault? Yes.
Could he tell Maverick he has to move on? Yes.

But he makes a choice not to, because that won’t bring Goose back. It won’t help Maverick to say those things. It won’t help himself to say these things. They both have to move on life despite their mistakes and Iceman knows that pushing Maverick won’t help. So he just opens up to him in a small way to let Maverick know:

Hey, I am here and I understand. I will miss him too.

Top Gun isn't propaganda

Listen to me. Everyone's said it, even fans of the movie, and you can't really deny it made people enlist like crazy, but Top Gun really isn't propaganda.

Ignoring everything about authorial intent and how Tom fought to make the movie way less jingoistic that it initially was, everyone seems to be missing an important point:

The Navy is the bad guy.

Maverick's journey isn't about learning to fly better, or killing Definitely Not Russians, or even making friends as such, it's about acceptance.

Acceptance by a terrible, restrictive system that has reject him and who he is for all his life and finally sees the value in who he is.

He wasn't accepted to the academy because of who his dad was. Completely unfair, right? Then at the beginning of the film, he gets disciplined. We're told he's a hothead, that he disregards order. But is that what happened? Well yeah, he ignored order, because following them would have led to a pilot likely crashing and killing himself and the RIO.

But the Navy doesn't care about people dying, it only cares about following orders, because it's a rigid, senseless structure obsessed with conformity.

This is why Goose dies: for once, Maverick represses his instinct, and does what Iceman tells him to.

Throughout the film, Maverick gets disciplined for flying different- for being different. (And yeah, if you look at it in detail, every single time he behaves recklessly is as an answer to someone excluding him. It's self destructive, because that's all you can do in a system that already thinks of you as a dangerous outcast.)

The climax of the film?

Finally being trusted, not despite of who he his and how he flies, but because of it. It's a fantasy of an oppressive system finally changing, and admitting you in its midst. This isn't going to make me any friends, but this is what Iceman accepting him means. Even Iceman, the incarnation of the system, the best pilot, the one who is exactly what the Navy wants, the one who killed Goose, wants him as his wingman.

Maverick, after a lifetime of being rejected, is finally valued. What changed for that to happen? Not him, because he wasn't wrong. The ending involves him learning to trust himself again.

The Navy changed.

The Navy was the antagonist.

losing my fucking mind peyton “has started at least 4 completely fake internet conspiracy theories“ thomas, the guy who got his south park fanfic published as an original ya novel by filing off the serial numbers, that fucking guy got a thread going viral on twitter abt how louisa may alcott was definitely 100% a trans man by CHERRY PICKING HALF-SENTENCES OUT OF HER WRITING, and NO ONE on twitter dot com is aware that this is coming from a person who’s been lying on the internet for fun for OVER A DECADE

Yeah, I wasn’t gonna go out cissplaining to all my trans friends sharing that thread, but I read the (current) definitive biography of LMA a couple of years ago, after I saw Little Women, and I was like, “I remember those quotes, there was a lot more to them than this.”

(However there is nothing wrong with filing the serial numbers off your fic to publish it, that is entirely normal and acceptable and it’s weird when people act like it’s shady.)

The filed off fic was originally for South Park and he filed off the serial numbers by making a Jewish character Irish (and experiencing “hibernophobia”, a word actually used in this book in 2022) and making Cartman Iranian-American while keeping all the homophobia/misogyny/racism that’s in character for Cartman from South Park. Filing off the serial numbers is not what’s wrong with that book what’s wrong with the book is everything else about it

Anyway it’s not really relevant here I just mentioned it bc it’s the last time Peyton was on the dashes and Twitter feeds of people so it’s likely to be the most recent thing people remember him from

Can confirm. Switching between English and other languages mid sentence is not only normal at my house, but also really convenient when the English word for things is too long.

I'm rewatching the episode, and Belos is SO deeply fuckedupedly religious, holy. This is ALL about Institutionalized Christianity. No wonder Disney cancelled this show. Promising myself to not make this too long so here's some quick points:

image

Humans are born into sin, inherently sinful and must spend their lives repenting for their nature (simply by being 'witches' he probably believes there is no such redemption for the inhabitants of the Isles anyways).

image

Your soul will be doomed to the ashes of hell if you don't repent now. Belos probably saw the 'devil' in his brother and thought he was doing a service of god to kill him.

image

Remember we are dealing with The Demon Realm. Belos probably believes he is trapped inside some kind of hell. The Titan is the BI's version of God, and he just repeats the rhetoric he's internalized to make it digestible for the citizens here.

image

He literally thinks he is a saviour and all of the carnage is worth it because he is ridding the world from the influence of the demon realm; which I am sure is very intentionally a society free of homophobia and racism, things that have been largely installed by Christianity and religion.

I might go so far as to suggest that Hunter's grooming by Belos (which doesn't have to be explicit in that way) is probably in reference to the proliferation of grooming done by priests, often with the excuse of this is 'how god wants it' / 'the titans plans'.

(from the FAQ)

CAN WE TALK ABOUT HOW DIFFERENT THIS IS??? because as someone who works in digital marketing, my jaw literally dropped.

When I put out an ad for a client on Facebook, I can target like... new moms in their 30s who are looking for furniture within a 10-mile radius. Or people who have an anniversary coming up. People who have just moved. People who are in a new relationship. People who have elementary school kids and tend to vote Republican. People who have liked certain Pages. It's absolutely unnerving.

the utter chaos of this, though.

it's just... incredible.

Honestly though, as someone myself who works in infosec and data privacy, what this suggests to me is that Tumblr either doesn’t have, or isn’t willing / able to use, that detailed targeting information about its users. Which is great!! Every other company out there - not just social media companies but everything from your grocery store to your car insurance company to your operating system provider - actively collects as much demographic data as it can about its users specifically for this kind of ad targeting purposes.

Obviously Tumblr still collects some data and uses it for ad targeting; they do have this in their Privacy settings:

image

But the fact that they’re either unable, or are choosing not, to make that data available to people buying Blaze posts is such a huge win for data protection and a giant thumbing of the nose to the FAANGs who believe that the only way to make ad revenue work is to make ads as targeted as possible.

I can’t express how much I hope Blaze succeeds with this insane and chaotic model. XD

Vincent & glass in Collateral

I’m very hyper today (I know, it’s so hardly noticeable, right!), so there’s a lot more that I think could be explored here, but for the sake of having zero attention span rn & just needing to spit this out before I forget, I’m mainly focusing on Vincent & something I noticed just now.

(there’s a post by @power-chordshere that roundabout mentions this too, I’m just being obsessive over a very small part of it)

image
image

When we first see Vincent around Max, he’s either fully behind glass or fully outside of it. There is no in between, it’s one or the other - full commitment, full assurance.

Their initial ride together is all shot from the outside. We need to be made aware how contained these two men are with each other & feel the barrier of this ‘getting to know you’ conversation.

image

The first shot of them inside together is when it’s becoming a little more intimate / friendly (in a bullshit way, but still), & Vincent is now sitting on the other side of the glass.

image

Once Max realises what’s going on, Vincent starts to appear physically divided by the glass. He’s all about improvisation, but he’s probably never had to improvise like this before, it’s fucking everything up (whether he’s aware of that or not).
